WHY 'COMPOSTABLE' IS A GOOD IDEA?

The UK's current recycling system, often cannot handle food contaminated products, like food trays, which means despite, the consumers best efforts, items may still find their way to landfill. Our compostable products are made from renewable resources such as corn, bamboo and bagasse (sugarcane). These are designed to be recycled with food waste in and industrial composting facility, so there is no need to seperate and clean materials.

We have a number of packaging products to offer which are made from biodegradable and compostable materials, helping you to be more environmentally friendly. But what is the difference between the two terms?

Biodegradable – Biodegradable refers to the breakdown and decomposing of the product, into natural elements.

Compostable – A compostable product is similar to a biodegradable product in the way the product breaks down. The difference is that compostable materials have been measured to ensure they break down quickly, usually within a 65 day approximate period. Compostable plastics are those that comply with a recognised composting standard. The most common standard, is the European Industrial Standard EN13432.

When compostable items are added to compost piles and exposed to the right elements, they can be extremely beneficial to the environment.

The Frequently asked Questions

How long does it take a compostable item to decompose?
It can take 3 - 6 months for a product to decompose, if in the right conditions. Decomposition can be affected by various factors including temperature and amount of moisture present.
What happens to PLA product that are discarded incorrectly?
It is important not to litter and any product that is thrown away incorrectly can have an impact on the environment. However, should a PLA product find its way into landfill, the earth or even the ocean for example, the product will breakdown within a couple of years (approximately) which is a big difference to the few hundred years plastic takes to breakdown.
Will compostable plastic items decompose in my home compost bin?
Home composting conditions are different to commercial facilities. For example, the temperature composting takes place at home is usually lower. Because the conditions vary, there is a separate certification and testing for home composting. Products need to comply with home composting standards EN13432.
What are oxodegradable plastics? Are they different to compostable products?
Yes. Oxodegradable plastics do not meet current commercial or home compostable standards. This plastic is made non-renewable sources like normal plastic, but it is designed to accelerate under defined conditions of time, temperature heat, oxygen and ultra-violet light. This process leave tiny particles of plastic behind which can be very harmful. Thirstybox do not sell any oxodegradable products.
Are PLA products and packaging less quality than other plastics?
We have been working really hard to source products that are completely fit for purpose. Because PLA has a melting point of around 150˚C -160˚C, PLA is perfectly suitable in carrying both hot and cold food and beverages. With the additional clarity of the PLA when used for clear packaging, most people will not be able to tell the difference between a PLA cup vs a regular plastic cup.
